Higgs Boson “Probably” Discovered

Ok, so maybe the Higgs Boson, something theorized in physics for a VERY long time, has a very weak connection to cellphones or electronics. But darn it! It’s so cool! If you don’t know what the Higgs Boson is and why it is important to everything physics, I’ll explain simply. The Higgs Boson is something that gives everything that has mass, mass. Something like a photon, that comes from the sun and can sometimes be a wave and sometimes be a particle, doesn’t have mass. But most particles have mass, we just didn’t know how. But thanks to CERN we may have finally found the Higgs Boson, which was theorized to exist because… We exist, and this planet exists, and mass exists. Everything that holds us all together is attached to the theory that the Higgs Boson is real.

Even if the Higgs Boson wasn’t found, this would have been an incredible discovery. Everything in physics and Quantum Physics is anchored in the theory that the Higgs Boson exists and gives particles mass. If it didn’t exist, then we would have to reevaluate everything we have learned about particles over the past century. I won’t go into the long winded explanation on how they found it, I’ll just simplify it as much as I can. Essentially, they took Protons and shot one off into one direction and another into the opposite direction. They would race down this tube in a circle until they met on the other side and smash into each other. They smashed into each other so quickly they break apart, sending all of their parts flying in different directions. This happens very quickly, and only recently, became possible to even “sort of” witness or measure. This very thing actually happens everyday in our atmosphere, but we couldn’t observe it until recently.  It all happens so quickly that when the Higg Boson, theoretically, shows up, it becomes something else almost instantly. But we may have finally spotted it, which may confirm all the basic theories of physics.

So why should you care? Well, this very thing I am typing on, a computer, was built on the fundamental understanding of physics and how particles, electricity and heat interact with one another. Everything technology is built and advanced on is built on advancing our knowledge of of physics and making things smaller, faster, and stronger. We even got to the point of making small simple machines that can’t even be seen with the naked eye. Don’t worry, they are like tiny slow moving cars, not super spy machines. If we truly understood the make up of the Higgs Boson, and in turn mass itself, we could advance our technology even more in the next coming decades. But, as for now, nothing much will happen in your daily lives. Cell phones, Like Android cell phones and iPhones, will continue to advance as normal, for now, as will all other technology. Just don’t be surprised to hear and see some exciting new things in the next few decades.
