Ice cream sandwich

Android looks delicious!

If you Blue Dots are anything like me, you are practically foaming at the mouth waiting for the latest updates from those magical folks at Google. Heck, even if you aren’t as excited as I am to be on the cutting edge of technology, it never hurts to keep your product up to date with Android’s many dessert themed upgrades.  The newest update that may be coming to your phone is code named Ice Cream Sandwich.  It brings lots of cool new features, a smoother interface and a uniform look to the Android Platform whether it’s a brand new or used cell phone!

Updates aren’t always major overhaul to the look and feel of the system. There will often be smaller updates that happen with OTA updates. OTA stands for Over-the-Air, these smaller updates correct glitches and make small improvements to the way your phone processes information. Curious as to what you are currently running on your system? Well fish that phone out of your pocket! It’s demo time!

Go ahead and select your settings button on your phone, then press the settings tab that pops up.

Scroll down and select the About Phone button. In most phones you’ll notice a system update tab at the top. (If you are using certain HTC models, this feature will not be present. They use a proprietary software on your computer to handle updates.) If you want to update your phone, simply click that button and it will check to see if you have the most up to date version of your firmware.

If you are just curious as to what version of the firmware you are running,  it will be listed in this same screen often.  Just scroll down and you’ll see Android Version listed.

Here is a handy list of all the updates in chronological order.

What’s that you say? Your phone didn’t get the update you wanted? Well one of the great things about your Android phone is that you can fake it till the make it. How does one do that?  Simply download from the Market Place any “Home Replacement” of “Launcher” apps. These neat programs will basically put a new theme or skin on your phone. You can almost always find one that will mimic the look of the latest update from the Android Team.  Keep an eye out for these neat apps, they often go on sale in the Market for as low as 10 cents. The skins, which are made by other users at almost always free or under a $1 to purchase.

Well, that’s all for this week Blue Dots. Just to recap, you want to make sure that your phone stays up to date on it’s firmware to avoid software glitches and the like and if your phone doesn’t receive the update you are after, borrow the look to blend it with the cool kids who did get the update.  I won’t tell.
