Sony revealed the Playstation 4 at their event last week with cell phones and games as the centerpiece. Microsoft and Nintendo have been pushing the mobile aspect of gaming lately, Microsoft more than Nintendo. With Nintendo’s WiiU using their tablet controller to play your full games anywhere in the house, and the Xbox’s Microsoft Smartglass enabling you to control the system on your cell phone, the key word here is integration. Sony, of course, didn’t ignore this ongoing trend and are pushing their own version of integration, but does it go far enough and what does it really mean for a consumer?
One of the best Android phones out there, Samsung Galaxy S III and Blackberry’s new Z10 square off this Superbowl I’m not a big football fan, I find it fun to watch, but I don’t go out of my way to watch it until the Superbowl. Why? With the added excitement of the game I have the added excitement of commercials pushing the envelope. I still have fond memories of the Budweiser frogs! Anyway, this years lineup of commercials was… sad. Nothing really stood out or made me laugh out loud. Two commercials in particular were ones I was looking forward to seeing. Blackberry and Samsung’s spots. How did they play out and did they do the job of grasping their audience.
Did I get your attention? Good, because RIM isn’t dead, just the name. RIM, creators of the Blackberry line of smartphones, has now dropped their business name for simply “Blackberry”. The change makes sense, since most people, when talking about RIM devices, reference them as Blackberry anyway. This announcement was the first of many in a big press event yesterday to celebrate Blackberry 10 release. What is Blackberry 10 and what else did they show off? Learn more after the break!
We heard of the Facebook phone… that has never really appeared on shelves, and it seems Mozilla, the creators of Firefox, want in on the action. Mozilla recently showed off a phone running their Firefox OS at CES, though no one was sure what to make of it. Until now. They have revealed their developer preview phone that is never meant to go on shelves, but for developers to make apps for. This phone, which looks like an iPhone OS in a Nokia Lumia’s body, has some specs following it’s release. Check out the specs after the break.
Better late than never right? I have been meaning to pick up Amazon’s Kindle Fire for months and have finally got around to placing an order. I got it much quicker than I expected and turned it on immediately. I actually got a much different interface than I expected. I knew Amazon put their own interface on top of the Android OS, but I didn’t expect it to be this different. I found the front page to be a large waste of space with huge icons taking up the middle of the screen. Those icons are what you used recently, which is a nice idea, but I would’ve preferred a different layout.
It’s no secret that the Droid Razr was a big hit this 4th quarter, but apparently it wasn’t a big enough hit to make up a 80 million dollar loss in revenue for Motorola. That isn’t typically a bad drop, but it also means stagnating profits. Motorola saw a big raise in profits once they partnered with Google, which probably saved their business as a whole. Recently Motorola agreed to be acquired by Google for 12.5 billion dollars, which is still being processed by multiple financial regulatory agencies including the EU.
