NPD just did a market study that has a few shocks here and there, but it was mostly expected as Android pulls ahead of all competition. Google’s ability to offer their OS across various price points gives them the advantage as Apple pulls in a strong second with their more limited choices. But what about the other smart phone OS’s? Does this spell doom and gloom for some?

Looks like Google is celebrating its ten Billionth download by offering several apps and games for 10 cents! I’m a big fan of Minecraft and seeing it go for ten cents made it an instant buy for me! Google’s Android has seen enormous growth this past year which is evident in it’s download frequency. This past year, almost every month, Android Marketplace has seen a 1 billion increase in downloads. That is incredibly impressive considering Apple iPhone, which has been around considerably longer, reached 15 billion this past summer.

Well well, it seems you don’t have to wonder into your local wireless providers store to give Windows Phone 7 OS a try. If you have an Android or Apple iPhone handy you can give Windows phone OS a try by downloading an emulator that does a pretty good job at simulating the new operation system Windows has been touting the last few months. Now that I grabbed you with that headline let me say that this isn’t a true versus match. I won’t say who is “wins” or who I think should just give up and go home. No, this is more of a “who is better at this, as oppose to this company being better at this”. Each of these OS’s have their strength and weaknesses, this is just me having a jab at each of them and seeing what they’re best at. So lets get start shall we?

RIM, British Tabloids and Sony are taking center stage recently and it isn’t the kind of attention any of them want. RIM had much of their Blackberry network shutdown, TWICE, in European, Africa and Middle Eastern countries. Sony has been hacked over and over again. Then we have News Corp. tabloids caught red handed in despicable phone hacking cases. These kind of things happen, and it isn’t unheard of for it to happen occasionally (minus the phone hacking thing). But this past year has shown more and more of these kind of tech disasters that no company wants to see more than once, if ever.

Amongst all of the rivalry between the Apple iPhone and RIM Blackberry Phones, very few are paying attention to Nokia. The name should sound familiar, but where have they been? Nokia is finding excitement and success in the glamorous and innovative. At this point, everyone who’s anyone has some style of smart phone. It’s almost difficult to find a phone that is just a phone anymore.

Nokia’s engineers are designing futuristic prototypes that they feel will either be the next exciting wave of personal electronic devices, or a unreasonably expensive gift to answer the age-old question, “What do you get for the man who has everything?”

We’ll get to Nokia’s sleek new designs in a second, but let’s start off by discussing their front-runner product–the elusive and exclusive Vertu. Varying in styles and price ranges, the Vertu starts at around $2500-$5000 and tops off at an exclusive 5-off phone made with diamonds, gold, and rubies for…around $350,000.

Is Nokia’s head in the right place, or do Blackberry and iPhone drastically outpace them financially?

Nokia is prepared to officially announce its next step: cheap cell phones directly marketed toward certain targets. This is the CXENS system which would label phones with one of these letters depending on the type of device it is. So…

C=Voice-centric handsets

X=youth-targeted, entertainment

E=business focused

N=high end

S=limited editions

The new phones are expected to be high definition touch screen with a 12MP camera–and the phones targeted to a much younger audience may even be sold as low as $60.

As promised, I’ll leave you with some insane new concept designs by the fine innovators (and mad scientists) over at Nokia. Enjoy!
