Illegal to unlock phoneAfter the dust has settled from the new development involved with a decade old DMCA law, we can take a closer look at what the ending of the unlock exemption means for everyone with a new or used cell phone. Upon it’s announcement people cried foul of the DMCA’s over broad definition of what is protected under copyright law. That any circumventing of factory installed software to get media is considered a breach of copyright. This is overly broad because you may just jailbreak a device to test your own programs, or unlock because you travel abroad often. But because you COULD use these processes to get to media that you typically wouldn’t, it is illegal under the DMCA. So why did this happen and how?

illegal to unlock used cell phonesUnlocking your used cell phone may be illegal thanks to a strict anti-hacking law called DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) passed last year, with folks online pretty upset with it’s broad stroke of power. This didn’t really hit the public’s eye until recently though, with the closing of a short window of legality allowed by the librarian of Congress. Back in October it was decided that, under the DMCA, unlocking your phone was illegal. The Librarian of Congress allowed a three month window for people to unlock as many phones as they wanted… that window closed this past Saturday.

This guide shows you how to perform a hard reset on your Casio Brigade C741 Verizon Phone. By doing this hard reset, you will clear all data from your phone and return your Caiso Brigade C741 phone back to its original factory settings. Make sure to back up any information on your device because a hard reset will erase everything on your device.

  1. From idle mode with the flip open, press the Center Select Key MENU > Settings & Tools > press the Center Select Key OK.
  2. Press Phone SETTINGS > SECURITY
  3. Enter the four-digit Lock Code, then press the Center Select Key OK. (May be the last 4 digits of the phone number previously registered to phone)
  4. Press Restore Phone.
  5. After reading the warning message that appears, select Yes > press the Center Select Key OK.
  6. After reading the message that appears, press the Center Select Key OK.
  7. Enter the four-digit Lock Code, then press the Center Select Key OK.
  8. The handset will turn off and then back on again automatically.

Buying a refurbished cell phone may be cost effectiveIf you are in the habit of buying the latest phone, you may want to look into the used and refurbished cell phone market. Verizon released the full details of what plans will be available June 28th and for all those customers with Unlimited data that will eventually be forced off, unless they buy used cell phones. The new plans are… confusing at best and expensive at worst. It seems everyone gets a kick in the wallet once this new plan kicks in, and shared plans are the ones getting the biggest hit. Refurbished cell phones The used and refurbished cell phone market keeps looking better and better… Remember that article we wrote yesterday? Lots of unanswered questions and hints at moving plans to cheaper services. Well, Verizon finally opened up and released the full details on the changes they will be implementing. Some of the things we mentioned yesterday have changed and the one question I had was answered. That question was, what if I am already upgraded to unlimited 4G LTE date? The good news is I can keep it… The bad news though…

Refurbished cell phonesI hope you like buying used and refurbished cell phones, because Verizon adopted the tiered data plans just under a year ago, but if you had unlimited data before then, you were fine. I got my Droid X just before the tiered service started and have been enjoying the freedom of not having to keep an eye on how much data I use. Well, those days may be numbered.
